Restoration Of The Brighton Belle
Brighton Belle Restoration

Panel Before Restoration Creating new 'hooks' for the paneling to sit on. Clamping newly spliced timber. Marquetry Panel awaiting restoration.

Wheathills are delighted to be chosen as the official restorers for the interior of the majestic Brighton Belle Pullman Train.
Below is a video showing Wheathills' restoration of the interiors of Carriages, 85. 88 and 91.

She was the Queen of all trains and to take a trip on her was an experience indeed. The Brighton Belle is the one and only all electric Pullman train ever built. Now she has embarked on her journey of restoration, returning her to her glamorous former glory.

Wheathills' responsibility extends to creating new panels to accommodate the ground breaking engineering solution to allow the train to function on a modern railway system.

Repairing existing panelling and components with authentic timbers that would have been selected in the 1930s for its fine quality and fashionable unusual appearance.

Over the past 40 years of standing unused, the carriages have suffered a great deal of water ingress, which has destroyed large amounts of marquetry, cross banding and quartered veneers. Initially we are concentrating on carriage 91, each component will be rebanded in Macassa Ebony to the edge of the main timber of the quarter cut Tiger Brown Oak. The panels of each carriage have a different iconic marquetry design, with carriage 91 being affectionately called the 'Coffee Pot'.
