|500 Year Old Timber Used For Table

In 1937 a 500 year old Oak tree blew over in Oxfordshire. The timber was
planked, stacked and would be ready to use 2 - 3 years later
when it had become seasoned. The log was deemed to be of the finest cut
of Oak seen for many years and therefore was saved and destined
for special use. Over the years the log became forgotten with
more and more planks being piled upon these exceptional boards.
Two generations of Saw Millers later, the timber was re-discovered during
a retirement sale and sold to Wheathills.
The inaugaral piece
has been created and inspired by an ancient staddle
stone that stands outside Wheathills which is of
a similar age to that of the Oak tree.
All the natural character and complex grain
configuration has been completely conserved. The pure beauty of nature's
creation can never be recreated so the design followed the natural form of
Traditional techniques were employed in the
table's creation, and the Cabinet Makers used Cabinet Scrapers to maintain
the timber's natural undulation and texture.
The bark has been removed in places to
reveal the buds beneath, and in other areas bark has been consolidated with
Conservation Resin. The objective was to conserve and enhance the natural appearance,
even the 'bark pocket' within the board was conserved as part of the natural appearance.
The surreal appearance of the table was further
improved by the design that gave the table the appearance of not being able to support itself.
The single leg was positioned to the far right and a brace supported the top that was jointed
through the board, and for further effect the joints were wedges of Walnut.
"Personally I have never seen such
a section of timber that exhibits almost every cut of timber in
one board - absolutely exquisite. - Nigel Heldreich"
