Historic Kitchen Remains

The kitchens at Tattershall Castle were destroyed by Cromwell when perhaps a simple complaint to the chef would have sufficed!

However, they now form a historic monument and as such their remains need constant care and maintenance to preserve the soft brickwork and lime mortar.

Wheathills has been commissioned to conserve the protective flaunching.

We found that the original material had become very loose and ineffective. Our solution was to create as an accurate mortar mix to the original as possible. We did this by removing the original material from its position, crushing it up to its original aggregate size and adding the appropriate lime recipe.
 
Discovering the original mix was complicated and involved chemical analysis in the conservation laboratories. The original builders used left over material from brick ends, charcoal, flint, random stone, shells and natural hydrochloric lime to bind the mixture.
