Lime Washing

Lime wash is an ancient paint made from limestone, coloured with pigments and works best on porous surfaces such as lime plaster, lime render, stone and brick. Unlike modern barrier paints it works by sinking into the surface. It has protective qualities and a deep matt appearance.

We applied seven coats to the original surface of The Gatehouse at Belton House. (A general rule of thumb is to apply one coat per year.)

Here we used a purpose made tool to clear and reform joints on the faux ashlar stonework (see images).
