Pulpit

Pulpit

Pulpit.

Robust and practical, this solid English oak pulpit has been crafted by Wheathills as part of an ongoing furniture installation in the C11th Norman church, St Leonard’s at Bengeo in Hertforshire.

The pulpit form is inspired by the shape of a goblet of altar wine and makes artistic reference to the design of the church roof interior, which was constructed by C11th ship builders and resembles a ship’s hull.

The pleasing curved open bar design allows light to flow through the pulpit and may be taken as a reference to the story of Saint Leonard who called his followers through the bars of their metaphorical prison cells, to begin a new life in Christ.

Great respect for traditional craft is evidenced in the construction of this contemporary style piece by our highly skilled craftsmen. Built using traditional methods, its modern design represents the continued relevance of the church today and for future generations of worshippers.
