Furniture designs for St Leonard’s Church in Bengeo, Hertfordshire.
Wheathills is delighted to be creating new ecclesiastical furniture for an early C12th Norman church in the village of Bengeo, in Hertfordshire.
We have liaised closely with the Reverend Robert Thompson, vicar of St Leonard’s and as a result our craftsmen have been able to design new church furniture pieces which identify uniquely with the building. Each of the pieces created to date make a respectful reference to the history of the church, both in design and construction methods, but are modernist in form to reflect the relevance of Christianity today and offer a recognition that they will be enjoyed by future generations of worshippers.
The work is ongoing and is being funded by public contribution.
Here are images of the designs for the altar table, candlesticks and the new font cover. Each piece, created in solid English oak has been designed to reflect an element of the story of St Leonard, the patron saint of prisoners and of pregnant women.
Please watch the video and visit our section on ecclesiastical and masonic furniture for details of the individual pieces.
I hope you appreciate our designs and we would love to hear your views on them,
Warmest regards,
Nigel Heldreich, furniture maker and restorer, French polisher and Wheathills business owner.
