The Medal Box

Creating a birthday gift for a man who contributed greatly to the RB211 Rolls Royce engine, gaining many accolades and medals along the way, seemed to be a most difficult brief.

However, the precise, understated and most modest nature of the man shaped the design perfectly. The box was named ‘The Medal Box’ and is created from book matched maccassar representing the airflow through an RB211 engine, inlaid in marquetry of dyed lime, boxwood, holly and ebony. All banded throughout in fine burr tiger oak and strung in boxwood and ebony stringing.

The lift up lid encloses an oak tray to keep safe the family tree scroll, two medals and a ‘special things’ box which has a marquetry decorated lid, depicting an open book with the Bristol University motto on its pages, a feather quill and a closed book representing learning and the book which he is currently writing.

The drawer front is decorated with a blend of carved acorns and marquetry leaves, representing Seven Oaks School and houses his CBE medal. The whole of the interior is upholstered in black leather and the inner lid is fitted with a solid silver hallmarked cartouche, hand engraved with a personal message.
